A four-year-old girl was killed in a suspected hit-and-run resulting in the arrest of a 27-year-old man and police seeking another man who they said has fled the country.
Hit and Run:
Late on Saturday night, Violet Grace Youens died in hospital a day after the crash in St Helens, Merseyside that seriously injured her grandmother Angela French.
They were hit at around 3pm on Friday by a black Ford Fiesta car which then crashed into a lamp post.
Merseyside Police are searching for a 23-year-old man suspected of involvement in the crash after leaving the country within three hours of the incident.
He appeared in the CCTV images wearing a blue t-shirt which police had issued prior to arresting the 27-year-old man, who is thought to have been wearing the black t-shirt.
The 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
A third man was held on suspicion of being in a stolen vehicle, but was released pending further inquiries.
French, 55, remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
After her death in hospital, Violet’s mother Rebecca Youens paid tribute to her “brave baby girl.” She said in a Facebook post “My beautiful baby girl passed away in my arms on 25/03/2017 at 23:38. Thank you for all your well wishes… she was just too poorly. However, my brave baby girl saved two lives by donating her kidneys and pancreas. I am truly heartbroken but proud of my little fighter.”
In a statement, her family added they were “devastated by the loss of their beautiful daughter but they wanted the organ donations to benefit other children and give them a chance to lead long and happy lives”.
Donations pouring in:
More than £10,000 were raised in one day in a fundraising website set up in memory of the youngster.
To help Violet-Grace’s family at “this truly traumatic time,” a GoFundMe page was set up to raise money
Police stated that they’re “in contact” with authorities from the country where the fleeing man is understood to have headed. He is a white male aged 15-20, around 5ft 10in tall, slim build, with brown hair and wearing a royal blue t-shirt and royal blue shorts.
