Washington D.C. can turn out to be the country’s official host city for the 2024 Summer Olympics

The city that is turning out to be the clear favorite of being the country’s official option for the Olympic Games in the summer of 2024 is Washington D.C. While the opportunity of entertaining the world’s greatest sporting event has given rise to great amount of tension, it has also caused a flutter of excitement. Yet logistic concerns ranging from crowd control to traffic control as well as the expense involved in hosting such a mega event cannot be ruled out.

Simultaneously, the city needs to feel proud of making to the finals and passing the selection process of being the nation’s possible candidate to organize the 2024 Summer Olympics because of the city’s unique potential and qualities as well as the value and opportunity that the Games might bring to the city if it gets selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Along with Washington D.C., the other American cities that have made it to the final of being America’s official city for the Olympics in 2024 are Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Fulfilling the criteria of a bid city is just the beginning and the long grueling process will only come to an end when the International Olympic Committee announces the name of the city that will host the 2024 Summer Olympics in 2017. In addition to the long wait, it still remains to be seen whether US will decide to join the race and make known its candidate city. This is because the country was awarded the fourth place in its earlier bids in 2012 and 2016 respectively. If it decides to run it will have to compete with cities like Rome, Paris, Istanbul, Qatar and Doha. Another point that needs consideration is that the IOC might want to award the games to a city in Africa in order to realize the long cherished goal of bringing the Olympics to the African continent.

Even so, the prevailing sentiment in the country is that the time is right for the country to submit its Olympic bid since it did not participate in the bidding process for the 2020 games. Unlike its earlier attempts when Washington was rejected as the candidate city for the country, DC2024 is going all out and leaving no stones unturned to help the city win the bid. The non-profit exploratory group has come up with a strategy that has at its center of attention the many advantages that the city has to offer.

Some of the advantages that the group plans to highlight are the sports facilities that are currently in existence in Virginia, D.C. and Maryland; experience in organizing major events as well as the availability of three functional airports. Made up of the city’s most successful and influential business leaders, the group plans to use the event as the means to augment the economy of the area just as the London Games had done for the city.

Even though it is not known whether Washington would make the selection, a thorough study is needed to better understand the pros and cons of hosting such an event including the financial aspect of the game.
