US rapper Wiz Khalifa published pictures of himself visiting the grave of the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar in the city of Medellin which angered Colombians
In the 1980s and 1990s Escobar terrorized Colombia, bribing, kidnapping or killing all those who stood in his way.
Federico Gutierrez, Medellin Mayor said that Wiz Khalifa should apologize for “advocating crime” and that the rapper should have brought flowers to Escobar’s victims instead.
The 29-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh posted photographs showing flowers and a marijuana joint on the grave of Pablo Escobar. He had played a concert in Medellin on Friday
Wiz Khalifa is a well-known marijuana consumer. He has had a strain of marijuana named after him which he markets with a company in Colorado.
But his gesture at the late Colombian drug lord’s grave did not go down well with the Medellin mayor who called the rapper a “scoundrel”. Gutierrez said “It shows that this guy has never had to suffer from the violence inflicted by these drug traffickers.”
Pablo Escobar along with his Medellin cartel are held responsible for around 4,000 killings, which include the bombing of an airliner in which all 107 people on board were killed.
Ever since Escobar was shot dead by police in 1993, the city of Medellin has been trying to shed its image as the cartel’s former headquarters.
This is why many Colombians were enraged by the photos of Wiz Khalifa at the grave and also posing in front of the apartment building where Escobar lived.
Not everyone’s angry:
However, others were amused by the outrage caused by Wiz Khalifa’s visit to the grave
“And here’s me thinking that marijuana-loving rapper Wiz Khalifa came to Medellin to visit the remains of [the recently canonised Colombian missionary] Mother Laura. Unbelievable,” wrote Twitter user @KarolinaWolf sarcastically
The rapper hasn’t still commented on the anger he caused among some Colombians with his Escobar-themed tour of Medellin
