Anybody that knows anything about rap and its history are well aware of Bay Area’s Boss, E-40. With a rap career that began in 1995 and spans 21 years, the rap artist is able to continue releasing hit records and songs. The entrepreneur also has business ventures, which includes his own line of beer, liquor, and wine.
It was recently announced that E-40’s latest gold record was hit single, “Function”. The single was the lead song for 2012 The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 2. When asked about the song, E-40 said, “Function changed the sound of the West Coast. The Energy rejuvenated memories of 2006. I put myself, YG, Problem and IAMSU!, all on one song with two of us representing Northern California. And, two of us representing Southern California. We went gold, independently and sold over 500,000 singles. Now that is an accomplishment!”
E-40 isn’t new to successfully releasing hit music, independently. He is viewed as one of rap’s biggest hustlers. The very first album E-40 released was independent. Now, the rap star is reaping the benefits of his labor. And, this was gold record #2. In May of this year, E-40 received his first gold record for “Choices (Yup)”. This is a hit single that was released in 2014.
These achievements have not gone unrecognized. Even E-40’s consultant had this to say about the artist: “Going gold as an indie artist is a major feat. Not only does the artist have to deliver a hit record, but he also must market his material with an indie budget. It doesn’t happen often in this era. Some may even call such an accomplishment a fluke, but when it happens to the same artist, twice in a year, it is a major achievement. The industry is officially on notice with this tremendous movement.”
