Freedom of speech and freedom of expression have always provoked aspects of emotional responses from the masses and sometimes led to violence erupting in the uproar of concerned people.
The recent polarization of the political platform in the United States, saw the nation break out into protest over several speeches or political mobilization, requiring security forces to harshly intervene or postpone events.
The University of California, Berkeley, had a scheduled dialogue of conservative pundit Ann Coulter that witnessed threats to the security of the campus facilities by student unions menacing a violent response to her attendance.
“A shameful situation” as described by Sen. Bernie Sanders who criticized the threats posed to the conservative woman, stipulating that such an incident to postpone her speech is a disgrace and should be counter-measured with different alternatives. He added: “I don’t like this. I don’t like it. Obviously Ann Coulter’s outrageous ― to my mind, off the wall. But you know, people have a right to give their two cents-worth, give a speech, without fear of violence and intimidation”
The Republican woman has been offered by the administration of the University to reschedule her event on the afternoon of the 2nd of May, the conservative lady and the college Republicans refused the offer, claiming that the new date and time would see student less able to attend which would negatively impact on her image.
The Republicans have been insisting on the original date and attempting to force the University administration to uphold it in that time, which see the latter argue that the same situation is relevant as it would coincide with the final exams of the students and would therefore witness even less attendance.
